TINA – Elizabeth Rose Morriss
TREVOR – Robert Notman

Get to know the winning writer Chris Beadnell:

1. What is your screenplay about?

A parent’s nightmare, the dreaded ‘birds and bees’ chat. This loving father steps up to the plate to answer the questions from his inquisitive daughter. He is nervous as he awkwardly navigates his way through an explanation. But, humorously, the circumstance changes at the end.

2. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?
This is a cute and heartwarming story which will resonate especially with every parent who has had the awkward task of explaining the facts of life to their children. It has a LOL ending, is family friendly and would be an easy, low budget production.

3. How would you describe this script in two words?

Awkwardly funny.

4. What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

The Shawshank Redemption

5. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

Haha. I wrote this in 2005, but re-worked it late last year (2015). So I suppose It took me 10 years!

6. How many stories have you written?

About 11- 12. Quite a few others in various stages of completion

7. What motivated you to write this screenplay?

This was the first ever screenplay I wrote and I was inspired and motivated to write a screenplay by attending a short film festival in 2005

8. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Initially (in 2005) I had no screenplay software so I wrote it just in a Word document with no industry standard formatting or layout. When I re-wrote the script I had the appropriate program

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Sport and humanitarianism.

10. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Just write. And edit, and edit and edit. Post your work on trusted script writing forums to get ideas and feedback. When you are comfortable, enter your work in comps.

Short Screenplay – FIRE! by Steve Biggs

Watch the July 2016 Comedy Short Screenplay Winner.

FIRE! by Steve Biggs

CAST LIST:

NARRATOR – Sean Kaufmann
CAPTAIN – Neil Bennett
PRISONER – Devin Upham
SOLDIER #1 – Robert Notman

Get to know the winning writer Steve Biggs:

1. What is your screenplay about?

A firing squad that gets interrupted by a 9-1-1 call.

2. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

It is fun, Fun, FUN!

3. How would you describe this script in two words?

Very funny

4. What movie have you seen the most times in your life?

Star Wars

5. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

It took 24 hours. Up to the hour I submitted it. The idea and gags were instant, I did have to trim off 1/3 of a page.

6. How many stories have you written?

Probably no more than two dozen. (Do white lies count? ‘Cause I’ve created lots of those.)

7. What motivated you to write this screenplay?

The challenge of a one page script. How many jokes and gags could I put on one sheet of paper? Right now there are seven, but put into the hands of a skillful director and actors there could be many more.

8. What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

Spell checking and getting it past my assistant.

9. Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

People. I love people and the human (mortal) experience. In worldly terms, I love my little business.

10. Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Don’t play video games. Don’t take a job that kills creativity. Don’t write because you think it will make you important. Don’t write out of your own wounds, I do not want to sip from the cup of your bad mental health. Keep your day job especially if it will keep you connected to real people. Relax; every fight, confrontation, speeding ticket or tooth that gets pulled, gives you material.

CARL – Dennis Barham

Get to know writer Mckenzie Trent:

1. What is your short screenplay about?

A young woman is forced to go to dinner with her dad’s new girlfriend, who happens to be a former school nemesis.

Why should this screenplay be made into a movie?

Ultimately it’s a story about an unlikely friendship between two women. For it to be funny and still a woman’s character story is a tougher accomplishment these days. If expanded, I think it could be quite an adventure for these women and their goofy man in common.

This story has a lot going for it. How would you describe this script in two words?

Rival comedy

What TV show do you keep watching over and over again?

The Office, Arrested Development

This is a very tight, emotionally engaging and fun screenplay. How long have you been working on this screenplay?

About a year

How many stories have you written?

Too many? Probably 6 or 7 that were finished and shot.

What motivated you to write this screenplay?

A really fun and successful improvised scene in a class. I just couldn’t let the idea go afterwards.

What obstacles did you face to finish this screenplay?

It was originally a small web series and expanding it into a longer short provided its own challenges with character development and story pacing.

Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?

Acting! And I’m really into my women’s basketball league.

What influenced you to enter the festival? What were your feelings on the initial feedback you received?

I was looking for guidance and some approval that I was on the right track. I agreed with most of the feedback.

Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?

Keep writing. And write what you love, not what you think other people want to read. Force them to pay attention to your material first.
