CLEAN BREAK, 5min, UK, Comedy

Short Film Playing at the best of Under 5min. Film Festival. Thursday July 28, 2016. Get your FREE Tickets: http://www.wildsound.ca/torontofilmfestivals.html

MOVIE POSTERCLEAN BREAK, 5min, UK, Comedy
Directed by Tim Butcher

It’s about time Ben and Elle split. If only they could agree who’s breaking up with who.

Director’s Statement:

Clean Break is a film that came out of a simple idea: I wanted to write something funny about a break up. I also wanted to write something that I could produce and film simply – leaving room to concentrate on the performances and the jokes. As such, it’s a pretty simple piece: it takes place in a single room, only features two characters and the action is limited. But I hope that, in imposing these limitations, I was able to make something that shines where I wanted it to shine – that is full of good, memorable lines, is believably performed and leaves a lasting impression.

My favourite comedies have always been those that take joy in language and dialogue – sitcoms like The Thick of It, Peep Show, Frasier, Blackadder, The Office and films like Gods of Summer, In Bruges, The Guard. I wanted to make something where every line hits hard – or might repeat to you when you find yourself in a similar situation in your own life.

I also like comedies where the performance is deadpan and realistic, where characters speak as if they don’t know what they’re saying is amusing. To this end, we took time with filming, performing lots of takes in order to make sure the energy was just right, and every line was getting the reading I felt it deserved.

I’m proud of the finished product. I think it probably couldn’t be much longer – you wouldn’t want to spend much more time in the company of these characters. But I hope it’s effective in the ways wanted it be – and I hope it makes people laugh.
