Director Statement
Looking for a compelling piece of cinema that provokes thought and challenges your view of the world?
Well, in that case: Keep it moving!
MAYBE NEXT YEAR, by design, is truly the opposite of that. Now more than ever, in a time where many tend to lean in towards socially conscious filmmaking, I increasingly find myself wanting to make films that take us OUT of the current state of the world. My most successful industry mentors have made this their bread and butter. Did you find any political or social commentary in films like Wedding Crashers, which happens to be one of the highest grossing R rated comedies of all time? Escapist entertainment is in short supply. We need it now more than ever.
The premise for the film was inspired by an evening at a birthday party, where I suddenly noticed halfway through the evening I was the only one of my group of friends who was not there with a date. Tormented by this in the weeks that followed, I speculated my friends were conspiring to set me up behind my back. From there, I, with the help of Paris Dylan, wrote a fever dream version of that. And while I consider myself “cooler” than Bobby, the single guy in the film, the fact that I even tried to make that argument proves that I’m not.
